Post-punk outfit HighSchool are cranking up the anticipation for their self-titled debut album, dropping October 31st, with their latest single “Sony Ericsson,” a wired, restless track about the fragile chaos of modern love.
Where their recent single “Dipped” toyed with fate and fatal flaws through myth and metaphor, “Sony Ericsson” its closer to home, twisting everyday phone anxieties into something sharp and cinematic. Think texts left hanging, the weird power of “seen” receipts, and the blurry gap between a digital persona and the person behind it. It’s equal parts claustrophobic and addictive, exactly like scrolling back through old messages you wish you hadn’t.
The band admit the song almost never made it to the record. “It sat in limbo for ages as a half-idea, until one late session we tore it apart and rebuilt it,” they explain. “Then it suddenly clicked…it had to be on the album.”
With nods to the shadowy, cool detachment of Interpol’s debut or more recent efforts from Bar Italia, HighSchool’s sound is intriguing and their style assures them of being a compelling new name to watch out for, as their first three singles can attest. They’re destined to become one of your playlists’ regular features.
