When Jenna Moynihan sings, “You’re so great and I’m not,” over the droning fuzz of “I’m Not” it’s a deeply ironic moment. This is a song that squares up to abuse after all, and while the lyrics belie the victim’s innocence at the hands of an abuser it highlights just how complex and confusing it can be for anyone who’s had to deal with suppressing their own pain, hurt or feelings of guilt.
Musically the song is a short shifting grunge burst with stand out pop melodies and it’s defiant at it’s core. Absolutely an earful of sugar helping the tough medicine to go down.
Daddy Issues‘ debut album “Deep Dream” is out May 19 on Infinity Cat Recordings and there’s a North American tour to go alongside the release, dates below.
