Not having watched The Idol this cover of Jealous Guy almost passed me by. It is, I suppose, an apt take on the neurosis and insecurities of the protagonist in question Im guessing Abel Tesafaye’s character? Correct me if I’m wrong. But rather than the pathos and bereft solemnity of the previous versions the glossy club sheen of The Weekend’s version gives it a sense of frivolity, insincerity almost.
Anyway, now that the series has been buried (it appears), and Abel’s setting aside The Weekend as a project maybe it’s also a grand hurrah, a fuck you – harking back to his boasting, hazy, House of Ballon’s era? So, enjoy, if that’s the right word. From the video clip (episode opening) that features the track below, The Idol looks satirically funny rather than abjectly terrible but again, tell me if that’s wrong!
