Olivia Rodrigo – Vampire

The opening of this new Rodrigo track “Vampire” with its plaintive piano and mix of disappointment and anger reminds me of something (musically) I just can’t pinpoint it. That’s not unusual – the entirety of her debut album sounded like a collection of ‘homages’ to other songs from the 90s/00s and whatever, musical and generational cycles blah blah blah. It’s fine.

Reunited with Sour’s producer Dan Nigro they definitely have a formula for success that serves them well. Indeed it could be claimed too well as the cover artwork for the single and upcoming album GUTS both feature the colour purple/magenta prominently and the album vinyl comes in magenta too. It was a step too far in the same shoes for some fans though hinting at the lack of new ideas or rehashing of similar ideas at least.

Time will tell, I do think Vampire is a poorer copy of its predecessors and visually it comes over as a one trick thing – but hey she may just love purple, it served Prince very well!
